Hello Lovely People!
Here were my highlights of the week! Hope y'all had some great weeks too!
- Spent half a day with only one contact in. Wasn't so much awesome as interesting to switch between one blind eye and the other, very weird experience.
- Discovered the ridiculous joy that is the Safety Dance video (link here)
- Reread one of my favourite teen books, Paper Towns by John Green.
- Had a petting spree with the department dog, HE WAS SO SOFT AND ADORABLE! I want one!
- Had dinner with my Brother-From-Another-Mother's-Mother, she is one of my favourite people, it was great to catch up.
- Went to see Brother-From Another-Mother's musical Assassin's (by Stephen Sondheim). Both funny and philosophical/controversial, a good mix, look it up!
- Discovered the perfect album to listen to while on my daily Skytrian commute (Viva La Vida - Coldplay)
- Started my week of silence, so far so good but more update on that next week!
- Got rained on by cherry blossom petals as well as tried to start a cherry blossom petal fight, like confetti!
- Watched Avatar: The Last Airbender and played geeky games with friends from school.
- Watched two of my friends spar, I've never actually seen anyone do a sword fight up close before, it was really neat to watch the body movements and flow.
- Wrote the second episode of my comedy webseries for school.
- Surprise visit from friends coming back from Korea! Their flight got delayed, but consequently the got to spend the night here in Vancouver, so we're not complaining! Twas a night of frivolity, seeing the sights, highjinks, stories from university, puzzles and an abundance of alcohol, food, music and joy!
That's all for this week! Till the next post, keep on smiling!
Stories, tidbits and challenges from a 23 year old trying to find her way in this crazy, effed up, wonderful world.

Week in Silence: Update
Hello Lovely People
I was thinking that I was going to be updating this blog along the week that I'm doing this challenge, but I've discovered that I have a lot more work to do this week than I thought. Also, on only day three, this challenge is very different than I imagined, and I'd like to look over my notes with reflection before posting stories about it (which I do not have time to do this week). So I will be posting about this experience, but not quite yet :)
Till the next post, keep on smiling!

Week in Silence: Why Do It?!
Hello Lovely People!
When you’re involved in a conversation, it can be quite hard
to understand the dynamic in your group of friends. By not being able to talk,
hopefully I can learn about the dynamics in my different groups of friends and
family. Also I can learn about the group dynamics of different areas, like the
bus, park, or grocery store.
So, when attempting a challenge like this, people will
always ask “Why are you even doing it? What’s the point?” Well, since I can’t
speak, I can’t really tell them. But I can blog about it! So, excluding the “getting
over my fear of challenges” reason (as featured in this post here), these are
ten reason why I am doing this challenge and what I hope to learn from it (why
you should consider it too!)
1) Learn about Communication:
With the growth of technology taking over our communication,
it can be hard to have an actual conversation that you are completely concentrated
on. Your mind wanders, you are thinking about what to say instead of listening
to the other person and, possibly, you are having a dual conversation via text
at the same time. By taking away my ability to talk (also I try not to text and
have a conversation at the same time, it’s rude), I can fully concentrate on
what the other person is really trying to say, and how they are trying to say
it. Also by not being able to talk, I can look at different forms of communication like sign language, mime, writing etc.
2) Learn how to Listen.
Along the same lines of 1, by taking away your ability to
talk, you learn how to listen. Walt Whitman wrote how he would just “loaf” on
the grass listening to the opera of sounds around him. Without worrying about
how I am going to represent myself in whatever place I’m in by my
conversations, I can learn how to listen to what that place truly is.
3) Learn about Self Communication.
Only when you take something away do you realize how much
you miss it. By not being able to talk, I won’t be able to state my opinions on
matter that might be important to me. This means I will also learn what these
matters are, and how I would normally communicate about them. I hope to learn
what really matters to me when it comes to communication, and how I can be
better at it.
4) Learn about Storytelling.
As someone in writing school, learning to tell a good story
is pretty important. By not being so caught up on what I want to say, or what
stories I want to tell, I can better learn how other people tell stories. Also,
by getting better at listening, I can learn about what other stories are out
there.
5) Learn how to get over my fear of being forgotten.
I talk a lot. And one of the reasons that I do so (besides
the fact that I’m opinionated and like conversations) is that I have a fear of
being forgotten. Which is why most
people who are blabbermouths like to talk, so they get attention and aren’t forgotten.
By taking away my ability to take over conversations and talk too much, I am
facing this fear and will hopefully learn not to hog a conversation.
6) Learn about Group Dynamics
When you’re involved in a conversation, it can be quite hard
to understand the dynamic in your group of friends. By not being able to talk,
hopefully I can learn about the dynamics in my different groups of friends and
family. Also I can learn about the group dynamics of different areas, like the
bus, park, or grocery store.
7) Improve my Handwriting
I have horrible handwriting. If my only way to communicate
is through it and miming, then hopefully both these skills will improve!
8) Learn about Time
One week can be as quick as a flash or as slow as forever. I’m
already anticipating that this week may be difficult, but hopefully I will
learn more about the passage of time throughout it! What makes a week go fast
or slow? Is it communication, events, friends, family, your mood, your job,
what?
9) Learn to be more respectful of others
By sometimes hogging the conversation, we can be rude and
disrespectful, without even noticing it. By being unable to talk, hopefully I
will learn how to stop this habit and let others have their say, even if I don’t
agree with their opinion. I really hope to learn to concentrate on what other
people have to say without concentrating on my reaction to it.
10) Vary things up a bit
I hate being a slave to routine. Not speaking for a week
should hopefully shake things up!
Surprise 11!) Learn to do this as a form of Protest
I've always wanted to hold a silent protest. Going a week without silence hopefully would give me some starting tools on how to do this should I consider it in the future!
That’s all for now (three posts in 2 hours is a lot, I
should actually go outside and test this challenge!) stay tuned for updates on
my adventures in silence!
Five Minute Fridays: After
Hello Lovely People,
Five Minute Friday’s are an invention by Lisa Jo-Baker. She gives
you a topic and you write on it for five minutes, stream of consciousness
style. No major edits, no changes, no rewrites, just whatever you can think of
at that moment! Link to this week’s submission of Five Minute Friday’s here!
This week’s topic: After
Start
What is after? Does it even exist? We use it all the time in
our daily lives: “what are you doing after school? Do you want to meet up after
the play? Why don’t we do that after this play?”
But after, this magical land of after, doesn't really exist.
It’s like tomorrow. You know it’s coming, and will eventually be here, but it’s
not really a thing. There is not real tomorrow, there is only today. There is
no real after, there is only now.
After distracts you from living your life in the exact
moment, as it is. The entire future does. We live in a world where our lives
revolve around after, tomorrow, 5 years, ten years, someday. We work towards
that future that we have created in our head, the life that we strive for,
everything we want after now is over.
But it’s a lie. Now can never truly be over. There is no
after. There is only this moment in time.
You can imagine that after your birthday you will live a
good life, after your dog dies you will try to get over him. After your life
has fallen to hell you will become a better person. But if you dwell on the
idea of after too much, of what could be and should be, it will distract you
from who you are right now. It will stop you from living your life.
The concept of after is good, sometimes. It can help you
plan and make things better for yourself. But if you let it rule your life, it
will stop being real. You will be constantly waiting for an after, a tomorrow
and a future. And it will never come. There is only now.
Stop
Week of Silence: The Beginning
(Beware: Long Post Approaching! OooOOoo!)
Hello Lovely People,
Today, I started a challenge. One at which I have no idea
whether I shall pass or fail, whether it shall have a point or whether I’ll
learn anything from it. This challenge is: to not speak for a week. Logistics: No speaking. Texting, typing, writing, that’s a ok, but absolutely no speaking!
You might be asking yourself “Huh? That’s a weird thing to do, why that?”. Well let me tell you, beautiful audience! It all started on a walk in the rain 2 hours ago…
You might be asking yourself “Huh? That’s a weird thing to do, why that?”. Well let me tell you, beautiful audience! It all started on a walk in the rain 2 hours ago…
This morning was strange. Actually, it’s just been a strange
week. I’ve been feeling melancholy, worthless and overall pretty stale since
Tuesday, for no apparent reason. But the worst moment was this morning.
I woke up on our foldaway couch bed. I had been feeling
bored and sad last night so, instead of sleeping in my bed like a normal
person, I pulled out the couch and made a blanket fort. There I proceeded to
watch crappy teen vampire shows and play sudoku’s in a melancholy state until I
felt the need to sleep. My dreams were fragmented and confusing, full of sad
images and depressing meanings. Therefor (despite the awesomeness of the fort)
I woke up in an even worse state than I fell asleep in. I laid in my couch fort
for a good 2 hours, listlessly browsing the internet and feeling generally
depressed while listening to the sound of rain falling outside. Part of me
thought I should get up, get ready for the day and go to class. The rest of me
was too apathetic to care.
Consequentially, I missed my class. I wasn’t too torn up
about it, it’s the least important class in this program (the teacher doesn’t
assign any homework or tests, he just sort of sits there for three hours
getting confused and rambling about TV. It can be quite fun, but it’s not
exactly a life lesson). However, that class had been the only reason for me to
leave my house today, meaning my one chance for excitement had just gone and
left. By my own choosing. I felt like crap.
At some point amongst the angst and the listlessness, I
realized I had run out of wool for my knitting project. I was kinda too
apathetic to actually do something about it, until I realised my room-mate’s
birthday is in 4 days and I really wanted to knit her something for it. So,
groaning and lifeless like a zombie, I managed to pull myself from my state of
bleah and go walk to the wool store.
Walking felt good, I had to admit. Even though it was wet
and gross out, it still felt good to just move. But I still wasn’t feeling
happy. My routine felt boring, I felt boring, life felt boring. I didn't know
what was so particularly upsetting about today, but something was super off,
more than normal.
And then it clicked: I had not talked to anyone all day.
Now, a normal person would probably think this and then
think “hey, I should probably talk to someone, that would make me feel better!”
And, on a normal day, that’s probably what I’d do. But for some reason, that
thought sent me to a flashback of my second year in university. I was attending
a one woman play, written and performed by a very talented 4th year,
about the time she spent a week in silence. The concept had seen a little
foreign at the time, but throughout the play, I got engrossed in the struggles,
triumphs and lessons that this experience brought her. It seemed like a very
worthwhile life experience, one I would love to try! At the end of the play, she
challenged people to try the experience themselves. I left the theatre think I
would definitely do that challenge as soon as possible!! It would be awesome,
horrible, fulfilling and rewarding!
Well, like most of my plans, I forgot about it. Life,
school, friends and family called my attention; I carried on my routine of the
time. Occasionally, throughout the years that have passed since then, I would
think about the challenge and how interesting it would be. I would daydream
about the experiences, encounters, awkwardness and fulfilment that I’d have.
But then, of course, I’d always think “no, not this week, I have a presentation.
No, not this week, I have rehearsals. No, not this week, I have ___, I have
___, I have ___”. And these excuses held me back from the real reason; I was
afraid. So the challenge would then be forgotten about and sink back into my subconscious.
My thought process today started along the same lines. Once
I had remembered that challenge, I started daydreaming about what it would be
like, the encounters, the discovery. But then the “No, I can’t’s” started
again, and I sunk back into my funk of “yeah, you’re right brain, I’d never
succeed at it, it’s not even that interesting a thing, it’s weird, I have other
stuff to do, it’s scary, it sucks, I suck…”
But then I thought: NO. Not this time brain. This time, I’m
doing it! This time, it’s not going to be a daydream, I’m going to see this out
to the end, and do this challenge. Because, over the years, there have been so
many things that I’ve wanted to do, but held myself back. So many times that I
could have made better choices and challenges for myself and others, and didn’t.
And it was always because of fear. Fear that it wouldn’t work, fear that people
would think I’m weird, fear that I’d fail, fear that someone else would fail,
fear I’d hurt or offend someone etc. etc. But I’m trying to change. Trying to
quell that fear and anxiety and learn about myself and the world, without
holding myself back. So what better to start with than a challenge that fear
has always held me back from completing.
I could have thought of any of the many challenges that I’ve
wanted to do. This post could have ended up about challenging myself to cliff
jump, or start a protest, or paint a painting. But I thought about this one.
And I’m seeing it through to the end, for better or for worse, whatever I learn or experience. Because, right
here and now, in this particular mindset, if I can do this, I can do anything.
So here goes!
So here goes!

Rant Wednesdays 1: "It's not you, it's me"
Hello Lovely People,
Let`s face it, everyone loves a rant. If you`re Canadian then you probably know of Rick Mercer, his rants are GOLDEN (if your not Canadian and you know him, congratulations, you just won life!). Getting something off of your chest and expressing your opinion in one long, uninterrupted monologue feels SOOOO FRIGGING GOOD, it's quite magical. Listening to these rants, and the passion that goes into them, is also awesome. I like listening to my friends rant even if I don't agree with them, because I know how satisfied they're going to feel when they're done. Plus people really want you to understand where they're coming from, making it a great way to really get to know someone, for all they're perks and flaws.
With this said, I'm starting a new post entitled "Rant Wednesdays", in which I rant about whatever is on my mind that particular week. This is both an exercise in creative writing as well as getting to know myself and why I think what I think. If you like my rants or just like the idea of a rant, I encourage you to do this on your own blog! As well as leave a comment :)
This weeks rant: "It's not you, it's me"
So for those who know me, or read last weeks Bits of Awesome Post (link here or on the side thingmabob), you'll know thatboyfriend dumped me. The break up was actually quite smooth, he's been a really good friend for a while and I hope he remains so in the future (yes, we both hope that, it's not just me being clingy). So I'm not mad about the actual break up (well, not any more). No, what REALLY pisses me off was the oh so typical line "it's not you, it's me"
Well that's just fan-tucking-fastic.
OK to be fair, he didn't actually say that line exactly. I think the exact conversation went along the lines of: EX - I'm just not ready for a relationship right now. I love hanging out with you, but I need to figure myself out. ME- Couldn't you have figured this out before you asked me out. EX- Well, I guess, but I didn't know it then. ME- Well. Great. Ok?
Now I understand ending a relationship because you are not mentally ready for one. BELIEVE me, I've been there, and it sucks to have to do that to someone. I'm not, and hopefully never will be, pissed off at someone who breaks up with someone to figure themselves out. That's not the problem.
The PROBLEM is that this line, this stereotypical STUPID line takes away the one good thing about a break up, this being your ability to actually be angry.
When you have just been dumped, being mad is the only satisfying part of it. Imagining horrible things happening to your ex while watching crappy teen horror dramas distracts you from the constantly crying, ice cream headaches and crappy teen break up dramas. It makes you feel more empowered and is actually a healthy step on the direction of getting over it.
But then the stupid a$$hole who just broke up with you has the guts to actually make you feel guilty about feeling mad! I really like my ex as a person, and the thought of him being in pain because he made me feel like I was in pain made me feel even MORE in pain, making me pissed off! When you really like someone, you don't like to see them suffer. I could tell that he was suffering because he had made me suffer, as well as he was suffering from his own problems. This then made me feel guilty whenever I tried to rant about him breaking up with me. Which just made me even more mad, because he took away my right to be mad! Which then made me feel guilty and selfish for being mad at his guilt about making me feel pain, which made me feel even madder! It's a never ending cycle!
It's not his fault he's having problems. That I get, and if anything want to help with it, if I can. But I DON'T like him using his problems to take away my right to be pissed off. It might not be what he was trying to do, but that's what he did. And that's what people always do when they push their problems on their ex as they're breaking it off.
So for all of you people out there who feel guilty about being pissed off at your "It's not you, it's me" ex: be pissed of anyway! Don't make my mistake and get stuck in thee guilt cycle of feeling for him (or her), because it's just going to make you even more confused and angry. Bitch them out, eat tons of ice cream, watch all the crappy teen films you can find and move on. Once you have come to terms with your own feelings, THEN you can worry about how to feel about his feelings.
Well, that about sums this rant up! Till the next post, keep on smiling!

Weekly Bits of Awesome: Mar 25-Apr 1
Hello Lovely People,
I'm including Monday in this weekly bit of awesome mostly due to it being part of the long weekend. For those who celebrate it, hope you had a fantastic Easter! Here's my bits of awesome things that helped me get through life this week.
- Found out that Helvetica is the most used font in the world, not Times New Roman, Arial or Courier, but Helvetica!
- More cherry blossoms were blooming! So pretty!
- Created a super ghetto home-made deck of Cards Against Humanity with Roommate and Roommates boyfriend, made out of cut up index cards.
- Went to Deep Cove, a beautiful spot in North Vancouver, where myself and Brother-From-Another-Mother walked along the beach, climbed cherry trees and fallen logs (and fell off them), as well as discovered a gelato store that had a little moving train set between it.
- Visited and slept over at Brother-From-Another-Mother's old home, kinda like a second home for me, I haven't been back for a while.
- Watched my first sketch I ever wrote be rehearsed, it actually wasn't horrible, thank god for amazing actors!
- Fist pumped out the car window to "Call Me Maybe" with Brother-From-Another-Mother in the middle of a traffic jam. The little kid in the car next to use joined in!
- Hung out with a friend I had not seen for a while on a beautiful day! We walked around Stanley Park, met a guy who was showing people the sun through his telescope, visited the Aquarium, had chocolate cake, got free facials at Lush and had a lovely dinner with her parents afterwards. Totally got sunburned!
- Game of Thrones and Doctor Who restarted!
- Learn that the best fish Captain Cook ever had was apparently a salmon wrapped in seaweed with a starch stuffed inside. My friends father has been trying to find out what the recipe was since he heard the story.
-Went to the beach with some friends from school, has the first swim in the Pacific of the year! FREEZING cold! The tide was low so we got to walk way out into the bay, swam up and touched one of the marker places. We got some beautiful views of Vancouver/ the mountains as well as saw the Coast Guard Hover Craft! Also got sunburned again!
That's what was awesome this week! Till the next post, keep on smiling!
